Daniel Weissbort (1935-2013) was a poet, translator, scholar and editor. He founded the magazine Modern Poetry in Translation with Ted Hughes in 1965 and edited it for nearly 40 years, and was for many years director of the Translation Workshop at the University of Iowa. He edited The Penguin Book of Post-War Russian Poetry (1974) and published numerous translations of Russian poets, including his own editions of Zabolotsky, Vino-kurov and Gorbanevskaya. His own poetry was published by Anvil and Carcanet in the UK and by Sheep Meadow Press in the US. Carcanet published his Leaseholder: New & Selected Poems in 1986 and Sheep Meadow published a later compilation, Lake: New & Selected Poems, in 1993.
