Roger Garfitt was born in 1944 and has been a freelance writer since winning an Eric Gregory Award in 1974. He was married to the late Frances Horovitz, whose Collected Poems he edited for Bloodaxe Books in 1985. From 1985 to 1992 he spent much of his time in Colombia, where he reported for Granta and The London Review of Books. His autobiography, The Horseman's Word, was published by Cape in 2011. Carcanet have published four collections of his poetry, most recently Given Ground (Poetry Book Society Recommendation, 1989). He performs Poetry & Jazz with the John Williams Septet and jazz composer Nikki Iles, Poetry & Dulcimer Music with Sue Harris on the hammered dulcimer, and Poetry & Guitar Music with Gareth Rees-Roberts. He runs Poetry Masterclasses for the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education at Madingley Hall.
