 Praise for Bloodaxe :

"Bloodaxe Books has a ferocious reputation as a publisher of ground-breaking poetry."
The Sunday Times

"A list that exudes confidence and promotes the good name of poetry."
The Scotsman

"If Bloodaxe Books are spoken of, we'll expect
The reverent murmur of - Respect... Respect"
Adrian Mitchell

"The books have class and clout. Bloodaxe is an extremely important venture."
Melvyn Bragg

"Bloodaxe -
well-designed and committed books, though never comfortable to read. They answer Kafka's definition of what real literature should be: 'One should only read books which bite and sting one. If the book we are reading does not wake us up with a blow to the head, what's the point in reading? A book must be the axe which smashes the frozen sea within us'."
Brian Hinton,
Tears in the Fence

  New to Poetry

As you will have seen from looking at our website and book list, there are many poets and many different kinds of poetry.
Poetry ranges from performance poetry to political poetry to religous poetry to difficult experimental poetry.
It is unlikely they will all be to your taste.

So this page is designed to help you find out what sort of poetry you like.

Use the boxes below to find a category of poetry you like. Then click on the heading below to get a list of poets who are linked to that category. Then you can find links to other similar poets and titles.

If you are new to poetry, we hope you find something to excite and interest you.

If you already know the work of some of the poets we publish, we hope you will still find the links and categories helpful. For a wider range of categories see the "Choose a subject" box in the right hand panel.

NB Categorising poet's work is a tricky and controversial business! So these categories are designed to be a guide only.
(You might, for instance, find the first poem, which is categorised as "academic" more philosophical than the "philosophical interest" poem by the daughter of a philosopher which makes wry poetic points about philosophy. But if you get to that point, you should already be starting to enjoy yourself!)
The categories are meant to be a guide only. They take into account both the style of the work and the subject matter (for instance, people looking for poems about something such as bereavement should find the categories as much help as people looking for a style such as modernist).
Good luck and let us know what you think on mailto:sales@bloodaxebooks.com
