Jack Common Kiddar's Luck

TV PUBLICITY FOR JACK COMMON’S NOVEL KIDDAR’S LUCK

Books That Made Britain: North-East England, BBC One, Sunday 16 October 2016, 3.45pm

Half-hour film looking at how books have reflected and portrayed the different areas they are based in and how important this has been to the region.

The programme on the North-East, broadcast on 16 October, opened with a profile of Jack Common’s autobiographical novel of working class childhood in Newcastle, Kiddar’s Luck.

Readings from the book were filmed in the area of Newcastle where the book is set (Heaton), and presenter Chris Donald spoke about Jack Common and wondered why he was never taken up by the London Literati.

‘Chris Donald turns the pages on books that capture the spirit of the north east and asks why so few local writers are championed by London-based publishers.’

Bloodaxe’s 1990 edition of Kiddar’s Luck is still in print.  Its cover was shown many times in the film.

Available on BBC iPlayer for 30 days after broadcast (Kiddar’s Luck is the first item):
